The United Arab Emirates (UAE) boasts a vibrant and diverse population, with a significant portion consisting of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). We Filipinos play a vital role in various sectors of the UAE’s economy, contributing their skills and expertise in areas like healthcare, construction, education, hospitality, and more.

Working abroad was not new to me. I received an offer letter in August 2013 back in the Philippines for UAE. This came after two years of honing my IT skills in a contractor base in Afghanistan. Having the opportunity to work again abroad brought mix emotions, as it meant leaving my wife alone again. After completing all the necessary paperwork and medical requirements, I embarked on my journey with a mixture of emotions, carrying both my aspirations for a better and prosperous future.

My first year was relatively easier compared to my first year in Afghanistan, because due to the presence of a sizable Filipino community in the workplace. There, I met numerous individuals who have since become lifelong friends. Some of them have even taken on the roles of godmothers and godfathers to my daughter. After four years had passed, I was fortunate enough to be promoted to the position of IT In Charge at one of the their hotel branch in the city.

City life, adjusting from the serene and peaceful environment of the resort to the hustle and bustle of city life. While being promoted to handle the IT Department in a 4-star Hotel was challenging during the first month. The crowded atmosphere was unfamiliar, and I struggled to acclimate to it. But I was able to adjust due to the presence of a sizable Filipino community in the workplace. It was a positive and memorable four and a half years, until an unfortunate event occurred.

Unfortunate event, While on my annual leave vacation, I received the news that the property had been sold, shattering my dreams as I hadn’t yet saved enough money to retire. Upon returning to the UAE without employment, I completed my clearance and paperwork, uncertain if the new management would retain me. This marked my introduction to the typical overseas Filipino worker (OFW) experience. Transitioning from a one-bedroom apartment provided by the hotel, I found myself residing in a cramped bed space shared by six individuals while actively seeking new job opportunities.

New Beginning, A week later, I received a call from a company I was familiar with, having freelanced for them for five years. They extended an offer, and I began working with them full-time as a Digital Marketing Specialist. Now in my second year with the company, I’m hopeful for a long-lasting employment tenure.

Being an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in the UAE offers a distinctive array of experiences, combining both opportunities and challenges. On one side, numerous Filipinos are drawn to the UAE by promising job prospects, including competitive salaries and the potential for financial stability for both themselves and their families in the Philippines.
