MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte declared on Tuesday that she is prepared to take over the presidency if President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. resigns amid ongoing controversies over alleged government corruption.

Speaking to reporters in Davao City, Duterte emphasized her constitutional role as first in line for succession. “There is no question about my readiness. I presented myself to you when I was a candidate for vice president with the understanding that I am the first in line in succession,” she said.
Duterte also stressed that her actions remain grounded in the Constitution. “I took an oath and I said [I am] to preserve and defend the Constitution. So hanggang diyan lang ako sa kung saan ang meron sa Constitution natin. Labas diyan ang — sa kanila na yun. Hindi na ako kasama diyan,” she explained, responding to rumors of a political reset, transition council, or caretaker government.
In addition, Duterte urged Marcos Jr. to undergo a drug test to address public concerns about his competency and decision-making. She offered her support during the process: “Huwag siya mag-alala, huwag siya matakot. Sasamahan ko siya, sasamahan siya… para sa bayan naman yun eh. Hindi naman yun para sa sarili lang.”
The Vice President’s statement comes after progressive groups called for both Marcos Jr. and Duterte to resign, and amid accusations from Sen. Imee Marcos alleging her brother’s drug use. Malacañang has downplayed the calls for a test, framing them as driven by “destabilizers.”
